LiMo Foundation: Tech companies join hands to form a mobile phone Linux group
Six big tech companies involved in the manufacturing of mobile phones around the world are collaborating together to push the use of Linux on this platform.
They have now announced a new foundation to push Linux standardization and adoption on mobile phones.
These six companies are Motorola, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone Group Services.
They had promised last year that they planned to work together in the future on a Linux-based open software platform for mobile devices.
These companies have now formed a non-profit group named LiMo Foundation. This is open to any individual or enterprise for an annual fee of between $40,000 and $800,000 depending on membership class.
This group is being led by Greg Besio of Motorola as chairman and Kiyohito Nagata of NTT DoCoMo as vice chairman.
