Hubble Telescope again facing troubles
US space agency NASA has confirmed that the main camera on the popular Hubble Space Telescope shut down again over the weekend.
This is the third time in the past year that the telescope has faced problems. With this, the orbiting observatory entered a protective “safe mode” on Saturday.
NASA said that early investigations pointed that the backup power supply for the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the 16-year-old telescope had failed.
The agency managed to recover the telescope on Sunday. They are expected to resume observations this week. NASA is also going to look into ways to switch back on the primary power supply for the ACS for operation in a reduced mode.
NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has already announced that they are scheduling a 2008 space shuttle mission to repair and upgrade the telescope.
