AMD not worried about Intel’s recent announcements
Microprocessor industry giant Intel recently made a couple of new announcements which could mean trouble for rival AMD.
The company announced that they working on developing chips using the 45-nanometer processing technology. Intel also signed on a deal to supply processors for Sun Microsystems’ server products.
AMD has responded by saying that they are not worried about these new developments. Steve Polzin, chief platform architect in the Computation Products Group at AMD said that they are also working on using 45nm transistor manufacturing technology. However, he could not reveal a timeframe for when AMD would use 45nm.
He said: “Pushing technology for technology’s sake is not what we do.”
Market analysts also believe that the technology would take a couple of years before they are used on mainstream computers. Polzin spoke about Intel’s deal with Sun: “We knew that one of the key factors that attracted Sun to AMD was the 64-bit extensions to x86. AMD64 is great technology. Intel decided to copy it, so what the heck.”
