Apple launches 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station and Unlock Patch
Apple Inc. has finally launched their new AirPort Extreme Base Station. In addition, the company as expected has also released the controversial enabler patch for unlocking 802.11n capabilities on certain Macs.
The patch is available as a paid download for $1.99 on Apple’s online store. It unlocks the 802.11n wireless capabilities included with all Intel Core 2 Duo machines and Mac Pro computers with AirPort Extreme.
This patch would let the consumers connect at faster rates to longer-range wireless networks. However, they would require compatible network connections in their areas.
The company is recommending that the Mac users check the “Network Utility” application to ensure that their systems are compatible with the software patch before purchasing it.
Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing spoke about these new product launches: “With five times the performance and twice the range, now you can transfer bigger files faster and get access to the Internet and your favorite digital media from many areas in your house you couldn’t reach before.”
