Viacom asks Google to remove some videos from YouTube.com
Media Company Viacom has asked the search engine company Google to remove more than 100,000 video clips from their video sharing service YouTube.com.
This comes after the two companies failed to reach a distribution agreement. Viacom confirmed that they have sent a notice to YouTube on Friday morning and they have asked them to remove videos from their owned properties including MTV Networks and BET.
Viacom claimed that the pirated versions of their clips hosted on YouTube have generated about 1.2 billion video streams. The company added in a statement: “Filtering tools promised repeatedly by YouTube and Google have not been put in place, and they continue to host and stream vast amounts of unauthorized video.”
Interestingly, many other media companies have already landed deals with YouTube to test the service to promote their content online. These include Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, and NBC Universal.
Viacom added: “YouTube and Google retain all of the revenue generated from this practice, without extending fair compensation to the people who have expended all of the effort and cost to create it.”
