Yahoo! goes Indian with portals in seven local languages
Internet giant Yahoo! is going Indian with portals launched in as many as seven local languages. The company aims to attain the market share in this country which is increasingly becoming more internet aware.
Yahoo! already has an English language portal aimed at the Indian web user. However, this enables them to address up to about 30 million users who are comfortable with English in the country.
The company claims that as many as 85 percent of India’s approximately 30 million online users now use at least one of Yahoo’s services.
Yahoo! also recently introduced a plug-in for their Yahoo! Messenger application which enables the web user to converse in local languages using easy to use features. The plug-in support as many as nine local languages.
They are also planning to introduce their Yahoo! Mail service in localized languages to enable the web users to send and receive emails in Indian languages.
The company hopes that as they expand their availability to Indian web users, more local advertisers would want to advertise on their services leading to expanded revenue collections.

This is good news for learners of any of the seven languages since there is relatively little Hindi (for example) content on the web.
