BBC going ahead with plans for Web TV
Media giant BBC has announced that their web TV plan will provisionally go ahead. This announcement comes just as the media watchdog Ofcom showed concerns on how this launch would affect the UK’s commercial telly.
BBC Trust has now amended its proposals for the web TV service. Regulators however worry that such a launch would cause a drop in DVD sales and rentals.
Diane Coyle, BBC trustee, said in a statement on this development: “Our view is that the BBC’s new on-demand services are likely to deliver significant public value, and should be allowed to proceed but subject to certain conditions in order to reduce the potential negative market impact.”
Ofcom had originally expressed concerns on BBC’s plans to make available entire programming for download. The revised plans have provisions to exclude this feature.
The BBC Trust added in a statement: “Where Ofcom has made recommendations for modifications designed to minimize negative market impact, the Trust has accepted these.”
