Wal-Mart to start selling movies, TV shows online
Retailing giant Wal-Mart is all set to enter the market of offering movies and television shows on the internet. The company is due to launch their online movie download store.
Sources say that the company would launch the “beta” version of the online video store today and they would be offering about 3,000 films and television episodes from all the major studios and some TV networks.
Initially, they are not likely to offer content from ABC, CBS or NBC but in the long run they would be added as well.
Interestingly, Wal-Mart is using its position in the retailing market by extracting a good deal from the content providers. They are going to offer films from $12.88 to $19.88 and individual TV episodes for $1.96. This is a bit cheaper when compared to offerings from Apple iTunes store.
Apple also only sells movies from two studios, The Walt Disney Co. and Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Studios. Wal-Mart is being preferred by more content providers considering they are offering variable pricing structure for movies. Apple in turn prefers simplicity for their end customers.
