AMD heats up Mobile Chip Market with Sempron
AMD might be making inroads into the server market against Intel, but they are lagging behind in the mobile market. However, they are working on it and the latest release from the AMD stable for mobile computers market is the new Mobile Sempron processor.
Mobile Sempron 3000+ runs at speeds of 1.8 GHz and has 128KB of Level 2 cache. It is available in quantities of 1000 units at USD134 per processor. It is designed to work in thin and lightweight notebooks and Gericom and Packard Bell NEC would be releasing laptops based on this chip soon.
Although this chip is based on the Mobile Athlon 64 processing core, it lack 64-bit extensions and has less memory to keep the prices down. Intel’s Pentium M processor is the reigning king of the chips for notebooks. As per AMD, these new Mobile Sempron processor consumes 25 watts of power under maximum operating conditions.
