Vodafone to provide MySpace access on mobile devices

UK based mobile service provider Vodafone is collaborating with News Corp’s MySpace. The two companies would now enable Vodafone users to access the popular web-based social network using cell phones.

The deal is exclusive and is expected to help Vodafone in boosting usage of internet access on mobile devices. It is also likely to help MySpace.com expand its presence in the European countries.

MySpace.com and Vodafone together said in a statement: “The partnership will enable millions of Vodafone customers to access MySpace mobile, allowing them to edit their own MySpace profiles, find and add friends, post photos and blogs and send and receive MySpace messages while on the move.”

The companies would be launching this service in the UK in the first half of 2007. Vodafone also aims to preload MySpace.com application on some of their mobile phone models in the coming months. In addition, existing members would be able to download the application for usage on their mobile devices.

    Myspace is already hugely popular and leads the field both online (according to NetRatings) and amongst mobile users. Telephia’s research in the U.K. suggests that MySpace is the site receiving content from the highest number of mobile consumers, with 21 percent of mobile uploaders saying that they have sent content there. However, other networks are not far behind. Windows Live Spaces, which launched a mobile version in 2006, is close behind at 19 percent. Video-sharing site YouTube and social networking site Bebo are in joint third place at 9 percent.
    The research also confirms that mobile uploading is particularly popular with younger consumers. 15–24 year olds are almost twice as likely to be doing it as other age groups.
