Mixi not worried by MySpace.com entry into Japan

Mixi Inc. President Kenji Kasahara has said that he is not worried about the arrival of MySpace.com in the Japanese market.

MySpace.com is the web’s most popular online social networking portal. Mixi is the country’s own social networking portal.

Kasahara said in a statement: “I think it will be hard for MySpace to cut into the subscribers that we have. Our social networking service is unique and we are continuously creating new services and renewing older ones.”

The service has 8.01 million subscribers in the country with 88.9 billion page views per month. It ranks number one among online community networks in Japan.

Kasahara added: “With so many page views by our users, our social networking service can provide advertisements in very unique ways. We can target our ads in very precise ways — by gender, residential areas, hobbies. Rather than pushing ads onto viewers, we can send information that the viewer really wants to see.”

He further said that they currently have no plans to expand their availability in other countries around the world.
