Rumors: Apple considering moving all iPods to flash memory
Prudential Equity Group analyst Jesse Tortora has been quoted as predicting that Apple Inc. might be considering shifting all their iPod models to flash memory storage.
Apple currently offers both flash memory and hard disk based iPods in the market.
If this report is true, the company might drop the hard drives from the higher-capacity models. The report said that the company is likely to start the transition to an all-flash iPod range toward the end of the year.
Tortora added in the report that this decision would help the company offer a wider range of models. Using flash memory would also boost the memory life of the higher capacity models.
The report said: “Our checks indicate that Apple is considering cancelling its next generation HDD-based iPod design, with the form factor refresh involving a move to NAND flash memory.”
The report further claimed that the company is considering adding Wi-Fi and GPS to their iPods in the future models.
