EMI Group PLC looks at the possibility of selling DRM free songs
Music company EMI Group PLC is reportedly talking with several online retailers about possibly selling its entire digital music catalog in MP3 format without copy protection.
This was reported by the media group Wall Street Journal.
This comes just days after Apple CEO Steve Jobs wrote in a note on the Apple website that the music industry should get rid of the DRM as it hampers the sale of digital music online.
The pure MP3 format can be freely copied and played on virtually any device. It would enable the users to purchase song from their choice of store to play on their choice of a digital music player.
The WSJ claimed in its report that the EMI has asked the retailers to submit proposals by Thursday telling the company what size advance payments they would offer in exchange for the right to sell EMI’s music as MP3s.
The company has been testing selling DRM free music in the market by releasing tracks by Norah Jones, Lily Allen and the band Relient K.
