Intel develops a test chip with 80 cores

Microprocessor industry giant Intel has developed a prototype chip with as many as 80 cores. Their latest processor sold in the retail market in comparison has just 4 cores.

Intel claims that this test processor is capable of performing a trillion calculations a second.

Intel Chief Technical Officer Justin Rattner further boasted in a statement that this kind of computing power required 10,000 processors working in a 2,000-square-foot computer room around ten years back.

The company however said that this device would not be sold in the market. They are planning to use it for testing new technologies destined for its mainstream processors in the next five years.

Rattner added: “Applications have somehow stagnated. We look at performance on a relatively short-term basis.”

Intel is also planning to present a paper on the device at this week’s International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco.
