Quanta Computer has confirmed orders for one million notebook PCs
Quanta Computer has confirmed that they have orders for one million notebooks for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project.
This project was started with the aim of ensuring kids from developing nations would get their hands on computing machines to assist them in studies.
Quanta has been given the task to manufacture these low cost machines which are expected to cost as little as USD 100 in a couple of years.
And they need huge orders to mass produce to bring the costs of manufacturing down. At the moment, manufacturing these laptops cost around USD 130.
Some of the global giants involved in this project involve chip maker Advanced Micro Devices, and Linux software developer Red Hat.
The people behind the project are working on a no profit no loss basis though Quanta is expected to make a little profit from these machines. A group representative said in a statement: “OLPC is a nonprofit organization, but Quanta is a contract manufacturer, a for-profit business. We can’t not charge a fee for making the laptops.”
