BD-HP1: Sharp planning to launch a cheap Blu-ray Disc recorder

Sharp has said that they have developed a Blu-ray Disc recorder that cuts costs by doing away with the tuner. Their BD-HP1 will use the tuner present in a television set to record TV programs.

Sharp said that their product would essentially be a player that can record. It connects via iLink (IEEE1394) to a TV.

The company added that this product would work with all models of its Aquos LCD TV line that sport an iLink connector.

One interesting feature of this technology is that the consumers can just power just their tuner, so the entire set doesn’t have to be switched on while recording is being done.

The company is however guaranteeing that this product would work with Sharp television sets. They have not tested it with competing products featuring the iLink interface.

Sharp added that BD-HP1 will go on sale in Japan on March 20 and it would cost around ¥150,000.
