LA Wi-Fi Initiative: Los Angeles to get free/cheap wireless internet access

Los Angeles city Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said in a statement that the residents of the city would get access to free or inexpensive wireless Internet access within two years.

This LA Wi-Fi Initiative is being planned to provide Internet services to the city’s four million residents.

The setup of the infrastructure for this initiative would cost the city around 60 million dollars. They plan to fund it through advertisers and telecommunication providers.

The mayor said: “By giving every resident high-speed access, we will transform Los Angeles into a cutting-edge city across every neighborhood and every economic sector.”

They plan to invite bids for this network later this year. They are aiming to have it running by 2009.
