Mobile Revolution in Sri Lanka

India and China are not the only countries which are seeing a mobile revolution going on. Even smaller nations like Sri Lanka are seeing massive jumps in number of mobile connections.

Sri Lanka’s telecom sector soared in 2006 to 7.3 million users. The country saw a 59 percent jump in new mobile phone connections.

Consumers benefited from increasing competition and falling mobile call rates in the region.

Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Commission added that there is also a waiting list of around 366,000 for fixed-line phone services. This has boosted the new subscribers to GSM and CDMA technology based mobile services.

The country also saw its fixed line subscribers rose to 1.9 million in 2006 from 1.2 million a year ago. The mobile phone users in the nation grew to 5.4 million in 2006 from 3.4 million a year earlier. Pre-paid mobile connection dominates the post-paid ones.
