Qualcomm showcases a “universal” chip that supports MediaFLO, DVB-H and ISDB-T

US based technology company Qualcomm has developed its own MediaFLO broadcast system to enable mobile service providers to provide mobile platform based television.

The company promotes this technology above the two rival technologies in the market: DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) standard supported by Nokia and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and Japanese ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial) system.

However, they now have showcased a “universal” chip that supports all three technologies.

Qualcomm said that they have also developed a new chip that supports Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS).

Nitesh Patel, senior analyst with Strategy Analytics Ltd spoke about this technology: “A big advantage of MBMS is that the technology will help operators better utilize their networks.”

Andrew Gilbert, president of Qualcomm Europe added: “Nokia and others are pushing hard for DVB-H to be the mobile TV standard in Europe but MediaFLO has some significant advantages.”
