Sony BDP-S300: Cheaper Blu-Ray player from Sony

Japanese consumer electronics maker Sony has said that they are going to launch a cheaper Blu-Ray player in the market. This is expected to help them take on Toshiba and other HD DVD backers in the storage media market.

This new player named BDP-S300 will cost $599. It is likely to have all the capabilities of the more expensive model BDP-S1 Sony is currently selling.

Toshiba currently sells a HD DVD player which costs around $499. Sony is of course however selling the Playstation 3 gaming console which comes with a Blu-Ray drive costing around the same.

Sony has sold more than 2 million units of their Playstation 3 console in the world markets till now and the number is going to get bigger as they launch the console in European markets next month.

Randy Waynick, senior vice president of the home products division of Sony Electronics said in a statement: “Eighty percent of people who buy a PS3 also buy Blu-ray movies to go with it. The consumers have determined that that’s the format they’re choosing to go with.”
