Apple: King of Cultural Tech Icons

I first came to know about Apple when I saw the first iMac image in the PC World Magazine. Apple never had any noticeable presence in India. And unfortunately even with the latest releases from their genius minds available in India, I just do not see many (make that ANY) Apple Computers around me.

But they continue to redefine style in the computing industry. The first iMac had such an influence that PC Companies tried to emulate similar styling. But as we all know, they failed miserably. But Apple never stopped there and their new releases continue to mesmerize the computer users all over the world.

My favorite iMac would have to be the second-generation release with the half cut soccer shaped processing unit. They have not only redefined personal computers styling but also became a cool prop in many movies. I can easily remember many Hollywood flicks showcasing iMacs and iBooks as the computers used by characters. I saw Zoolander yesterday and they had an iMac in it! Surprisingly even Indian Bollywood movies are not away from the Apple fever with it featuring in flicks like Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani.

If iMac and iBook were not enough, iPod has redefined the digital music player market. It is not only the largest selling player but also the most popular one on the net. And the funny thing is, while the competition prepares itself to compete with the current outings from Apple… they are perhaps busy developing the next big thing. Pity, their sales are no match for the cheap PCs, which currently power more than 95% of todays desktop computers.

Do not mistake Apple products as being only about high style. They are powerful computers that cost a little more but the stability of the UNIX layer underneath the simple OS is a joy to use and rarely crashes. I’ve been using Macs since 1992 and would not use Windows unless absolutely necessary. I understand that Apple is opening an Apple Store in India soon. Go see them, use them, and you will love them.
