CSS Managed Recording approved by the DVD Forum
Sources say that the DVD Forum has now approved the CSS Managed Recording technology. This technology would enable users to download movies from the web and burn them to black DVDs.
These DVDs would be burnt using the same content-protection system as commercial discs sold in the market.
However the use of this technology requires different discs. This would not work with the regular blank DVDs sold in the market today.
The burnt Discs would remain compatible with the vast majority of consumer DVD players. This was claimed by the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA).
DVD CCA added in a statement that this technology would be initially offered for professional usage. This means that services which offer downloadable movies for burning on DVDs would still take some time to appear.
