Safaricom launch money transfer service in Kenya
Safaricom is the dominating mobile service provider in Kenya and the company has launched a money transfer service for their customers.
This service would use short message services for conducting transactions and the company claims that it is the first service of its kind in the world.
This newly launched service would enable its 5.8 million subscribers to use their cell phones to send money. This would be beneficial to a lot of people in the region considering a lot of people work in cities to support their families in villages.
Safaricom’s Project Manager Susie Lonie spoke about this new service launch: “Only one in five Kenyans have access to financial services, this new service will allow Kenyans to send money home (to rural areas) with ease. This service is the first of its kind in the world. We have plans to take it elsewhere…the first international link, between the U.K. and Kenya, will come in the very near future.”
