Sony prefer PS2 over PSP

Sony is not exactly going mega with the launch of its handheld gaming system named PSP on December 12. Instead, critics already fear that getting hand on one would be a very tough affair. Sony is shipping pretty moderate numbers of PSP units for the launch.

Much of it is attributed to Sony’s focus on their mainstream gaming machine PlayStation 2. PS2 is very profitable for the Japanese electronic giant and they plan to keep their marketing efforts on promoting PS2. And to generate more excitement into the PS2, they recently introduced a slimmer version.

Reports say that around two lakh units are being shipped for the initial launch with additional three lakh units to be made available by the year-end. And considering the excitement already generated by the device, it is sure to be sold out within days of the launch.

Sony is reportedly making a loss on the sale of PSP console. In order to promote the platform and get game developers to make games for it. The recent competition from Nintendo DS on the other hand is planned to get profitable in the short run itself. Looks like, consoles are back in business.

When would Microsoft drop in with something based on their X-Box! Time will tell…
