Wikia search engine to be unveiled later this year
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has said that they are planning to unveil their under development search engine by the fourth quarter of the current year.
He said that the developers hope to provide a competent challenger to current search industry giants Google and Yahoo!
They are using a similar model to the Wikipedia community-written and edited encyclopedia for this upcoming search engine service.
They would be providing tools and technology to allow programmers across the Internet to collaborate and provide their own inputs for this search engine technology.
Wales said: “The essential core principles are that I think search is now a fundamental part of the infrastructure of the Internet and it’s really fundamental to society as a whole and therefore as citizens of the world we should be concerned about it being a secretive black box.”
He added: “To create a full-scale crawling spider of the Web actually requires a great deal of investment in hardware.”
Wales said that they are planning to provide enough resources to the project to enable them to full-scale crawling of the World Wide Web.
