Sony working on PlayStation 3 chip
More news coming in pointing towards Sony’s emphasis on their PlayStation platform. Even with PSP launch coming up, Sony is working on their next generation PS3 along with IBM and Toshiba. And the way to achieve better results with the processors is to go multi-core. The new chip is focused on multi-threading platform, which would allow multiple processes to work together.
They have named the new electronic chip ‘Cell’ and it would be powering next-generation devices including the highly anticipated PS3. It would have a multi-core chip with 64-bit Power core, optimized to run resource intensive media applications running games and movies using broadband.
They are displaying the powers of the chip at International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco this week. IBM senior vice president John Kelly III had this to say to the media: “We’re revealing just a sampling of what we believe makes the innovative Cell processor a premier open platform for next-generation computing Relevant Products/Services from IBM eServer xSeries Systems and entertainment products”.
Interesting times ahead for the gaming industry…

that will be gud, trouble is, they bringing different versions of the ps3 out arent they, so i will probly be tempted to buy the most expensive with all the ‘bells and whistles’ which will definately for sure, leave me bankrupt. I just wish Sony would set dates for their products to be released, i cant help thinking all this secrecy is kinda annoying and MAY stop a FEW non-followers of PS2 to drop out of the purchase place. But yeh, theyr only a few and it means more for us lot to fight over. Cant wait, they have a stunner in the making!
