Samsung Electronics launches 8 GB flash memory for mobile devices
Samsung Electronics has announced that they are now shipping samples of their highest-density flash memory in 8 GB capacities.
Till now the company had been shipping memory chips in 4 GB sizes. The company said that these chips are the high-density version of their moviNAND line and these consists of four 50-nanometer, 16-gigabit flash modules, a high-speed MultiMediaCard (MMC) controller, and related firmware.
These chips are capable of transferring data at a rate of 52 MB/sec, twice the rate of the 4 GB chip.
Samsung further claimed that this new chip is as much as 20 percent smaller than other flash-based memory. The high capacity would further remove the requirement of shipping mobile devices with external memory card slot.
Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis added on the market trends: “You can never be too rich, too thin…or have too much memory. GPS is certainly a growing category, as is video on the phone, and they both require storage. But the major news is for music phones.”
