Sony Walkman takes on iPod
Sony is finally out with their first direct assault on the famed Apple iPod digital music player. As reported earlier, Sony has gone ahead and released their first MP3 supported Walkman. In addition, it uses Hard disk as the storage medium.
iPod is currently the market leader in the digital music player segment. Apple is selling millions of iPod, which have become an iconic symbol of the current generation with even music group U2 recently endorsing it with launch of a special variation. And Sony being the largest maker of electronics good and the makers of the legendary Walkman are currently the underdog in the market.
The older variations of this walkman were not very successful considering it used Sony’s proprietary Atrac technology. Sony’s music selling service Connect sells music in this particular format. Now with the MP3 playing abilities, Walkman would be able to directly import the very popular MP3 files enabling consumers to have more flexibility.
