Lycos Europe Anti-Spammer project under attack?

Lycos Europe took a brave initiative when they started the ‘Make love not spam’ project. They are publicly attacking some of the biggest spammers of the world. So some kind of backfire was expected.

Reports say that the company’s website was hacked by spammers just as the initiative got popular. Thousands of users have downloaded the screensaver from the website and are actively participating in the effort to cause financial damages to the spammers.

Even an Internet analysis company Netcraft confirmed that the site was not accessible for a large part of the day on Wednesday. Lycos Europe’s Malte Pollmann had this to say: “This is a hoax. We have obviously reached our goal and are getting to the spammers. On our servers, we don’t have any logs of an attack. No one was able to verify that.”

The company is coming under fire for their project, which almost touches the lines of DDoS attacks. The company promises that none of the servers they are hitting would go down because of the attacks as they monitor them continuously. Their aim is to slow the remaining bandwidth to 5 percent so that the sites crawl when accessed.

The US government isn’t going to do a damned thing about their spammers bringing the internet to its knees, so it’s up to we spam victims to do whatever we can to control the problem.
