Yahoo! Mail to have UNLIMITED Storage!
Internet industry giants Yahoo! has said in a statement that they plan to offer unlimited e-mail storage to their webmail service users starting May this year.
This is huge news from the company which has nearly quarter of a billion users. Yahoo! faces intense competition from both Live Mail and Google Gmail in this market.
The company currently offers around a gig of webmail service to their customers. Microsoft puts the limit at around 2 gig. Gmail constantly increases the available space though it is around 2.8 gigs at the moment.
Yahoo co-founder David Filo said in a statement: “We are giving them no reason to ever have to delete old e-mails. You can keep stuff forever.” Sounds like something straight out of Gmail’s feature list.
Filo added: “People should think about e-mail as something where they are archiving their lives.”
John Kremer, vice president of Yahoo Mail added: “We have been closely monitoring average usage. We are comfortable that our users are far under 1 gig, on average. What we see are an increasing number of rich media files as consumers send more photos.”
This service would however not be available in China and Japan where the company works in collaboration with local partners.
Interestingly, Indian webmail service Rediffmail is one of the few services worldwide to be offering unlimited space to their free customers.
