EMI and Apple to hold a press conference maybe to discuss DRM free music

Music company EMI and iPod maker Apple Inc are scheduled to hold a press conference today. The two companies are likely to announce plans to offer DRM free music to their subscribers.

There are also rumors on a possible Beatles deal but inside sources claim that this is not going to be the case today. EMI interestingly has been the distributor for the Beatles since 1962.

The event is going to take place at EMI’s headquarters and the special guest is Apple chief Steve Jobs. The two companies have said that this is not an April Fool’s Day joke.

Steve Jobs recently said in an open note to the public talking about this desire to have DRM free music in the market. He wrote: “Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat.”
