Topix to recruiting users to report local news
Online news reporting service backed by three top U.S. newspaper publishers has announced that they would now start recruiting users to report local news.
This kind of local news is generally not covered by traditional outlets as they prefer to target a larger audience.
The service said that the registered users would be able to submit news to the site from their computers and mobile phones.
The investors in this project Gannett Co. Inc., McClatchy Co. and Tribune Co. have already put in $64 million to date on this service. The aim is to provide information to web users at a centralized location while generating revenues from online advertising.
Sterling Market Intelligence analyst Greg Sterling spoke about this new initiative by Topix: “They’ve created a container, or culture, where it’s possible to really see if it will work.”
In addition, Topix has said that they would soon complement their service with the .com version of the domain.
