Steve Jobs might not be in favor of DRM free Video right now

Apple has just announced a collaboration with music company EMI and they would now offering EMI’s music catalogue in DRM free version for a bit more than regular songs (with DRM).

This is a historical moment for the company as they become the first major retailer to offer DRM free versions of songs as an alternative.

However, market analysts have said that the company might not be as much interested in offering DRM free videos from Apple iTunes.

Steve Jobs was quoted as saying to the media: “Video is pretty different from music right now because the video industry does not distribute 90 percent of their content DRM free. Never has. So I think they are in a pretty different situation, and I wouldn’t hold it to a parallel at all.”

James McQuivey, a principal analyst at Forrester Research however has different opinion: “Most people believe he’s taking advantage of a technicality when he says that. No movie studio would ever support the iTunes store if it was clear that Jobs would be pushing them to remove DRM,” he said. If Jobs did start offering Disney content on iTunes without copy protection, the other studios might fear that he’d start pushing them to do the same.”
