Financial Times: EU now investigating Apple for possible violation of competition rules

Media group Financial Times has reported in a news item that the European Union regulators have launched a probe against Apple Inc. and their Apple iTunes service.

They are going to investigate whether the Apple iTunes service is possibly violating the competition rules. The report added that Apple and several major music companies had been sent a “statement of objections” alleging that the deals related to the sale of music through iTunes in Europe might be violating competition rules.

Some of the targeted music companies in this rumored investigation are Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Music and EMI Group PLC.

The newspaper said that one of the primary issues is that Apple currently prohibits users in one country from downloading music from Apple iTunes service aimed at another nation.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling had this to say about this report: “We don’t believe Apple did anything to violate EU law. We will continue to work with the EU to resolve this matter.”
