AMD starts shipping 3GHz dual-core Opteron chips

Microprocessor maker AMD has announced that they are now shipping their 3GHz versions of its dual-core Opteron chip to server vendors. This is the latest step taken by the company to compete against the market leaders Intel.

AMD added that they plan to start full-volume shipments by early May of the new Opteron 2222 SE chip for two-processor servers and the 8222 SE chip for eight-processor servers.

These new processors are essentially similar to their existing dual-core chips but offer faster speeds touching 3GHz. AMD believe that these processors are perfect for customers requiring extra speed to handle complicated tasks.

They also have plans to develop yet another model in this range. AMD expects to start shipping a 3.2GHz dual-core Opteron chip by the fourth quarter.

After that the company aims to concentrate on their quad-core Opteron design called “Barcelona” which should start appearing in the market by the mid of current year.
