.com and .net domains to get expensive

VeriSign Inc. has announced that they would soon increase the prices customers pay for their .com and .net domains names.

These are the top two highly used domain names on the internet. The annual levy for “.com” will increase 7 percent to $6.42. The fees for the “.net” will go up 10 percent to $3.85.

As per market reports, there are as many as 62 million “.com” names and 9.1 million “.net” names in use today. The price hike is expected to fetch VeriSign an extra $29 million a year.

VeriSign added that these increased prices would only apply to new name registrations and renewals. Customers are free to purchase domains at the current prices until Oct. 14.

The company added that the price hike is necessary to keep up with growing online use as well as threats from hackers. VeriSign spokesman Tom Galvin added: “Over the last six years, VeriSign has dealt with two phenomenons when it came to the infrastructure.”
