WiMAX coming to Intel Centrino platform soon
Microprocessor industry giant Intel has said that they are soon going to add the WiMAX technology to their Centrino platform for mobile computers.
This is expected to give a massive boost to wireless broadband services as notebook users would be able to surf at faster speeds on the move.
Intel said that the WiMAX will be offered as an option with Montevina which is the successor to the next version of Centrino named Santa Rosa.
The Intel Montevina platform would be using a Penryn processor manufactured using a 45-nanometer process and would come along with an integrated hardware video decoder.
Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of Intel’s mobility group said in an interview on these technologies: “When I was on stage in 2003 when we introduced Centrino, the attach rate for Wi-Fi was 10 to 15 percent. And when I told them it was going to be in every airport, in every coffee (shop), it’s going to in your house, everyone was laughing. Today, the attach rate is about 95 percent.”
