Cisco Systems building a Wi-Fi network in Brescia Italy
US based tech giant Cisco Systems has announced that they are building a massive Wi-Fi Network in the Italian Province of Brescia.
This network would be spread across 4,800 square kilometers and would deliver both broadband connectivity and applications like voice-over-IP to over 200 rural towns.
Joel Vincent, Cisco’s outdoor wireless senior marketing manager spoke on this initiative: “Cables were expensive to bring into the area and cellular couldn’t be justified. But Wi-Fi mesh is ideal for reaching remote areas.”
He added: “We’re seeing a trend where entire geographical areas and even entire countries are deploying Wi-Fi mesh to reach larger populations.”
The city of Brescia said that they decided to go ahead with Wi-Fi as WiMAX is still a technology in its infancy. Most current generation computing products already comes with built in support for Wi-Fi.
