RIM: Software update on their network led to downtime of the Blackberry service
Research in Motion has said in their statement that an insufficiently tested software update at the company’s network data center caused the downtime on their blackberry service.
This service outage affected millions of users of their wireless e-mail service. RIM said that the downtime occurred due to “the introduction of a new, non-critical system routine” designed to optimize the cache of the system that handles e-mail sent to BlackBerry users.
Company added that they had no idea that the update would cause so much trouble for their customers but admitted that the pre-testing of the system routine proved to be insufficient.
RIM also admitted that the process designed to maintain service in the event of a failure “did not fully perform to RIM’s expectations”. It took them quite some time to restore the service back to its normal stature.
