Maruti Suzuki SX4 based sedan coming next month

Maruti Suzuki is on a roll in the Indian market. They just recently launched the Zen Estilo model which has become their latest best seller in the Indian market.

And now, they are planning to enter the premium sedan market with the launch of their SX4 based car sometime next month.

Maruti SX4 would be taking on existing products in the market including the super popular Honda City sedan. It is likely to be powered with a 1.6-litre M-series petrol engine.

Maruti is likely to offer two variants of the SX4 car and it is going to be priced at around Rs. 7 lakhs. This car fills the space created when Maruti stopped manufacturing Baleno late last year.

Maruti Udyog managing director Jagdish Khattar spoke on their plans for the future: “We want to be a complete carmaker and not just the small carmaker.”

Maruti is already the India’s largest automaker but they have practically no sales in the luxury car market. Esteem is their only sedan model and is not doing very well.

Parent company Suzuki is already selling SX4 hatchback in Europe and a sedan version in china. India would get the sedan model considering Maruti already has too many hatchbacks on offer in the market.

Some other competing products for this new upcoming car from Maruti includes Hyundai’s Verna and Accent, Ford’s Fiesta and GM’s Chevrolet Optra and Aveo. Tata Indigo and Renault Logan are also potential competitors at the bottom end of the segment.

Maruti is manufacturing this new car on a brand new platform at its new manufacturing facility at Manesar. The company claims that this car would have a local content of 79%. Sadly, Maruti currently has no plans to launch a diesel model of the SX4 in the market. They are currently selling only their Swift hatchback with a diesel option in India.

Anything above 6.5 lacs will make it difficult to survive in the market

Finally a good looking car in the C segment from Maruti. Specs look exciting. Pricing and marketing will be crucial for survival since Maruti has not established itself in the C segment. Should price it extremely aggressive and make a lot of noise.
