Orkut: More popular than Google in India?
Now, we all know that Alexa is not the best tool to measure the popularity of the websites on the internet. However, it still remains the most accessible service to compare the popularity of different websites.
At this moment, Alexa statistics show that Orkut.com is the second most popular website in India. The most popular is Yahoo!
Google’s Indian search engine portal comes at third place. Google’s international homepage comes fourth. Now, if we combine the traffic of the two Google sites, I am sure it would overtake Orkut and possibly even Yahoo.
But looking at the way Alexa calculates the popularity of the website, a personal project started by a Google guy is at the moment more popular in India than the Google itself.
Statistics are funny. Sometimes they can get ridiculous. Here is a screenshot.
Incidentally, Microsoft’s MSN service trails even the domestic Rediff web portal. Times Jobs might claim that they are the no. 1 job portal in India, Naukri.com continues to dominate the popularity charts as per Alexa ranking.
YouTube, Blogger and Live.com completed the top ten. Digg is at 81st position and that’s pretty cool. Especially considering the fact that Digg users are very unlikely to be using Alexa toolbar on their web browser.

Their are some more surprising facts – on Alexa (indian rankings)
As per the common perception on indian matrimony space Shaadi.com & bharatmatrimony.com should have been higher in rank.
BUT interestingly Jeevansathi.com seems to be the leader in India and ranks at 28th position ahead of Shaadi.com – 31st position. Bharatmatrimony and tamilmatrimony ranks at 100th and 69th rank, respectively.
