Lycos Screensaver now in Trojan form
Lycos Europe created a flutter and now they have taken a backseat. They say the effort with MakeLoveNotSpam was successful as it proved Internet users are fed up with the spammers and want to get back at them.
However, the excitement is yet to die down. F-Secure, a security firm has reported that some people are trying to use the publicity this campaigned gained by releasing a Trojan that claims to be the screensaver itself.
The problem is that a lot of people have heard about this effort but could not get to try the screensaver out as the site got went down after only a couple of days. And the mails being traveling around pretend to carry the screensaver. The Trojan in reality steals usernames, passwords, credit card details, and e-mail addresses.
I have personally received mails from people asking for a copy of screensaver. This can lead to quiet some problems. People do not realize that screensaver is no longer functioning considering the centralized servers at Lycos have been closed down. Lycos Europe need to take steps to clarify that people should not be enticed into downloading or installing anything that pretends to be the MakeLoveNotSpam screensaver.
News.com reports the mail content to have a message like: Be the first to fight spam with Lycos screen saver and the attached file is said to be Lycos screensaver to fight spam.zip.
