One Laptop Per Child: 100 dollar laptop now costs around $175
$100 laptop was started with the aim to provide low cost computers to kids in developing nations to enable them to get access to the latest technology.
However, the project is facing many hurdles and one of the primary ones is that the 100 dollar laptop is now costing them around USD 175.
The founders further said that the machine is going to be compatible with Microsoft’s Windows Operating System.
Nicholas Negroponte, head of the project said in a statement: “we are perhaps at the most critical stage of OLPC’s life.”
They need confirmed orders for 3 million machines to get the production started in bulk to keep the costs low. Some of the interested governments include Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria and Libya.
Negroponte added that they are hoping that the cost of manufacturing the laptop would drop about 25 percent per year as the project unfolds.
