Wal-Mart denies cheap HD DVD player rumors
Some days back there were rumors in the market that the retailing giant Wal-Mart was getting manufactured HD DVD players in Taiwan to sell them at cheap affordable rates in the US market.
Wal-Mart has now said that they have placed no such order and this is just a rumor in the market. Market analysts had said that if Wal-Mart had taken such a step, it could have boosted the HD DVD’s offense against Sony’s Blu-Ray to become the standard for next generation storage media.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson said that reported leaks concerning the $250-299 players, had no merit. He added: “The article… was full of inaccuracies and we had no participation in it. Not sure how it originated.”
For now, the retailing giant is supporting both the formats by making available players from both the camp. HD DVD format has been developed by Toshiba while Sony is behind the Blu-Ray technology.
Sony has a slight advantage with their format as they are shipping their PS3 consoles with built in Blu-Ray drives. Though, Microsoft is offering an HD DVD drive accessory for the owners of Xbox 360 gaming console.
