Honda to launch their small car in India in 2009
Japan’s second-biggest largest carmaker Honda has confirmed that they aim to launch their compact car in the Indian market by 2009.
Indian auto market is dominated by sales of smaller cars. Maruti Suzuki is the market leader as their range is dominated by several compact models like the Maruti 800, Maruti Alto, Maruti WagonR, and Maruti Zen Estilo.
Honda would be manufacturing their new car at their new factory in the western state of Rajasthan. The company is investing close to around $728 million on this project.
Honda however did not reveal any information on what car they plan to bring to India. It is not clear whether they would be bringing any of their existing models here or develop a brand new vehicle for the Indian market.
Masahiro Takedagawa, chief executive officer of the local unit Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. said in a statement: “We have several options and a couple of them we are developing from scratch. We are now in the premium segment, which is 20 percent of entire market; hatchbacks are 80 percent of entire market.”
