Court dismisses Vonage Holdings’ request for a retrial

A U.S. appeals court has denied a request made by VoIP Company Vonage to order a retrial of the case related to patent infringement filed by US based telecom company Verizon Communications.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit turned down the request made by Vonage which suffered a loss in the lawsuit.

The court said that the company could cite the new Supreme Court ruling as part of its pending appeal of the case. Vonage on their part had argued that the case should be retrial after Supreme Court loosened a key legal standard.

The Supreme Court’s ruling had made it easier for targeted companies to invalidate some patents on the grounds they are obvious inventions.

Vonage was found guilty of infringing on patents owned by Verizon related to VoIP technologies. Vonage had said that these patents can be misused by Verizon to target other VoIP services considering the broad nature of the patents.
