Disney adopts Blu-Ray DVD Standard
The DVD Format war continues as Disney gave their support for the Blu-ray format without ruling out possibilities on the HD DVD format discs. They plan to start releasing movies in the Blu-Ray format as soon as the players are released in the USA. Disney’s subsidiary Buena Vista Home Entertainment Division as expected has followed the same path.
The problem is that competition in Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, and New Line Cinema are supporting the Toshiba’s HD DVD format. This technology would reach the consumers earlier as fewer changes are required in current DVD players to support these discs. Moreover, they are also cheaper to produce.
Fortunately, both these groups are not ignoring the possibility of supporting the other formats in the future. For user, it becomes complicated to choose a standard when buying a DVD player. Blu-Ray DVDs have more capacity while HD-DVD discs are more efficient to store data. In the end, the popular DVD format would win the standard war. And it might not be the best one out there. As we have already seen with Betamax and VHS formats in the past.

Marketing drives the market, and a good product name generally wins over quality of the product.
HD-DVD is destined to win with the popularity of HD-TV. The consumer can easily make the connection between the two. Blu-Ray is destined to go the way of the Betamax.
