Sun to work with Ericsson to develop mobile server applications

Sun Microsystems has announced that they are now collaborating with Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson. The two companies would now work together to develop Java-based server applications that can run on wireless networks.

The two companies said that they would develop for the GlassFish open-source community which is devoted to design server applications based on the Java Enterprise Edition platform.

Sun open sourced this platform last year to promote development by third party developers. Sun’s collaboration with Ericsson would allow them to expand into applications delivered on mobile networks.

The agreement between the two companies would provide the developers access to the SIP portion of the IMSprotocol to deliver Java applications over wireless networks.

Ericsson would also be contributing parts of its server development to GlassFish. Experts believe that the company might even allow the developers to test their applications on a live IMS-based network.

Martin Harriman, vice president of marketing and business development for the multimedia business at Ericsson spoke on this new development: “We realize that in developing new services around IMS that will change the way people live their lives; we can’t do that on our own. This is a big step for us [and] we’ve never worked like this before.”
