Google explains why they retain user data

Search engine giant Google has posted a new post on their official Google Blog stating why they remember information about searches we make on the Google search engine.

The company has stated three major points in their blog post:

Improve our services
Maintain security and prevent fraud and abuse
Comply with legal obligations to retain data

Google further said that they took great care in deciding a time period of 18–24 months to retain this data.

They claim that they are the only major search engine to have announced their policy publicly and they aim to take great care in preserving user privacy information.

Google also highlighted the fact that they do not ask for sensitive user information like name, address and phone number to let them use their various services.
