San Francisco controller’s office approves Google-EarthLink wi-fi internet plan

The San Francisco controller’s office has issued a favorable review on a proposal submitted by search engine giant Google in partnership with EarthLink.

The two companies want to provide free wireless Internet access to the citizens and tourists in the city.

The report released by the controller’s office states that the service could save millions in ISP fees for the people in the region.

Google and EarthLink would also provide a paid service with extra features to the people in San Fransisco.

The free service would become a major alternative to competing services from DSL, Dialup and Cable internet service providers in the region.

Nathan Ballard, spokesman for Mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement on their decision: “I think this is one more reason for the board to approve free Wi-Fi as soon as possible. It shows that Wi-Fi creates a favorable impact for the city.”

Cole Reinwand, vice president of product strategy and marketing at EarthLink had this to say on this new development: “We’re really pleased to have a city agency evaluate the deal with this level of diligence and look at the areas where we’d have an impact, whether it’s providing funds for digital inclusion or the impact on the economy and savings for consumers.”
